Thriving and healthy communities

THRIVING COMMUNITIES

Our Neighbourhood Support programme contributes significantly to the communities where our sites are based.

To encourage all our people to build on the great work we already do in our local communities, we allocate funds to each site to help local causes. Over the past five years we’ve given around £150,000 to local community groups and projects, charities, schools, sporting teams and other great causes across East Anglia and the East Midlands.

We’re committed to being a good neighbour in all our communities and proud to support our people to use their time and skills in the community. This could be helping to convert an abandoned piece of land into a kitchen garden, re-designing day care centres, or improving efficiencies at local food banks.

CREATING LOCAL OPPORTUNITIES

Encouraging young people to consider a career in agriculture or ingredient production is a key focus for our business.

In the past ten years we have recruited and trained over 100 graduates and over 90 apprentices. The British Sugar apprentice scheme was awarded 15th place in a nationwide survey of 100 UK companies in 2016, conducted by allaboutschoolleavers.co.uk.

British Sugar also reached finalist status in two categories – Best Level of Support and Top Employer: Engineering, and ranked at number 12 out of 50 in the Top Advanced Apprenticeship Employers.
