How sugar is made

STAGE 1: GROWN AND DELIVERED (UK CROP)

1. 1.Sugar beet is grown in East Anglia and the East Midlands. Sown in the spring, it grows through the summer ready to be harvested in autumn and winter.
2. 2.The harvested crop travels  to one of our four advanced manufacturing plants in Bury St Edmunds, Cantley, Newark or Wissington. 
3. 3.When it arrives on site, the sugar beet is washed.

STAGE 2: AT THE PROCESSING STAGE

1. 4.The sugar beet is sliced into thin strips called cossettes.
2. 5.These thin strips are mixed with hot water to extract the sugar and a lime solution is added to the raw juice to remove any impurities.
3. 6.The syrup is filtered, heated and seeded with tiny sugar crystals, which grow into the required size. The sugar crystals are then washed, dried and cooled.

STAGE 3: FORMATTING AND PACKAGING

Sugar is delivered to our customers in a variety of formats for both industrial and retail markets. 

While most of our customers buy granulated sugar, we also produce a wide range of caster, icing, brown and liquid sugars.

These products are delivered to our customers in a variety of formats, from 500g bags to bulk tankers.
