Cantley Operational Update

22 December 2022

Further to a significant plant failure at our Cantley factory on the 19th December, we have taken the decision not to process sugar beet at this factory for the remainder of the 2022/23 campaign. We believe this is the appropriate action following our initial assessment and in the interest of safety whilst a full investigation continues.

We're still very thankful that no-one was injured and we continue to work together with our agricultural and operational teams and growers to ensure that we minimise disruption as best we can to our growers and hauliers. Sugar beet will continue to be diverted and processed at our factories at Bury St Edmunds and Wissington. Additional costs from these increased distances will be met and agreed by British Sugar.

Notes to editors:
  1. This incident does not impact our commercial customers.
  2. Our sugar factory at Cantley factory can process up to 1.5 million tonnes of beet per annum. Producing up to 220,000 tonnes of quality sugar
  3. Earlier in the year we announced we would be introducing changes for the Cantley campaign, to accommodate climate change plans & ambitions (https://www.britishsugar.co.uk/media/news/2022-05-10-changes-to-202223-campaign-at-cantley-factory)
  4. Cantley remains integral to our four-site strategy. Over the last year we’ve invested £9.9m in a new waste-water treatment plant, £1.25m in automation and a private 4G network at the site
