Prime Minister visits Newark Sugar Factory

12 May 2014

British Sugar welcomed David Cameron, Prime Minister, to its factory at Newark last week as part of a tour of the Newark area involving the Conservative parliamentary candidate Robert Jenrick.

Prime Minister David Cameron said: “I was delighted to visit British Sugar in Newark along with Robert Jenrick, the Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Newark. “This government has helped create more than 1.6million apprenticeships so I was particularly pleased to meet a group of apprentices working at British Sugar. “Companies like British Sugar are vital to the success of our long-term economic plan and the creation of jobs that give people across Britain the security of a monthly pay packet."

The visit included a tour of the site and an opportunity for the Prime Minister to see British Sugar’s advanced and highly competitive food manufacturing facility, as well as meeting with engineers, technicians and apprentices from Newark.

Dr Mark Carr, Group Chief Executive of AB Sugar said: "I am very proud to be able to share how the home-grown sugar industry contributes to the UK's rural and agricultural economy.  British Sugar has invested in new technology in order to maintain a leading position in the industry and it will continue to do so. In order to be successful in this we believe people really are at the heart of our business and we continue to support a multi-skilled workforce with specialists in engineering, business, finance and agriculture. Over the past ten years we have recruited and trained over 100 graduates and 90 apprentices."
