Harvester Evaluation
Improving yields and profitability by minimising harvesting losses
Throughout each sugar beet season, growers invest time, effort, and considerable cost in growing the best sugar beet crops they can. Ensuring that the highest possible proportion of this beet is recovered and delivered to the factory is critical in maximising the grower’s profitability.
The Field-to-Factory Partnership seeks to support harvesting operators by demonstrating their value to the industry through operator knowledge sharing and in-field harvester evaluations.
What actions are we taking?
We are working with the BRRO and harvester manufacturers to ensure a robust operator training programme is in place. This is modelled on the existing programme run by the BBRO for drill operators.
A secure platform will enable growers and harvester contractors to identify areas of opportunity that may improve crop recovery in the current and following seasons. British Sugar will facilitate this by providing a harvester recovery evaluation service highlighting areas where there could be opportunities to increase yield and identify harvestable losses. This will be conducted in partnership with the grower and the contractor, ultimately developing a yield improvement plan.
Finally, the contractor will have the opportunity to share their commitment to the industry by publishing feedback they have received from their customers. This will be through the Field-to-Factory accreditation scheme.
